Kenjutsu or Kenbu



Kenjutsu is the umbrella term for all traditional (koryū) schools of Japanese swordsmanship, in particular those that predate the Meiji Restoration and the modern styles of kendo and iaido that emerged from the traditional schools in the late 19th century. Kenjutsu, which originated with the samurai class of feudal Japan, means "the method, or technique, of the sword. This is opposed to kendo, which means "the way of the sword. Kenbu 剣舞 it's a form of sword dance which was popular through the 1950’s to about the late 1960’s. It's not actual kenjutsu, nor does it represent actual fencing or even gekken 撃剣. During the 1960’s many kenbu performers were also chanbaraeiga ちゃんばら映画 samurai fight scene choreographers.
