Concepto y propósito del kendo

Hoy, en estos tiempos de pandemia, el club nos ha enviado un mail que merece la pena compartir con la comunidad kendoka

El concepto de kendo: es disciplinar el carácter humano a través de la práctica de los principios de la espada.

El propósito de practicar kendo es:

Moldear la mente  y el cuerpo.

Cultivar un espíritu vigoroso.

Y mediante la práctica correcta y rigurosa,

Esforzarse para mejorar en el arte del kendo.

Apreciar la cortesía humana y el honor.

Relacionarse mutuamente con sinceridad.

Y perseguir siempre el desarrollo de uno mismo.

Así uno será capaz de:

Amar su país y a la sociedad.

Contribuir al desarrollo de la cultura,

Y promover la paz y la prosperidad entre todas las personas.

 Caro Tonzinho, estou em Paris, num hotel com sacada sobre uma praça, que dá para toda solidão do mundo e diz:

Procura-se um amigo. Não precisa ser homem, basta ser humano, ter sentimento, ter coração. Precisa saber falar e saber calar no momento certo. Sobretudo, saber ouvir. 

Deve gostar de poesia, da madrugada, de pássaros, do sol, da lua, do canto dos ventos e do murmúrio das brisas. Deve sentir amor, um grande amor por alguém, ou sentir falta de não tê-lo. Deve amar o próximo e respeitar a dor alheia. Deve guardar segredo sem sacrifício. 

Não precisa ser puro, nem totalmente impuro, porém, não deve ser vulgar. Deve ter um ideal e sentir medo de perdê-lo. Se não for assim, deve perceber o grande vazio que isso deixa. Precisa ter qualidades humanas. Sua principal meta deve ser a de ser amigo. Deve sentir piedade pelas pessoas tristes e compreender a solidão. 

Que ele goste de crianças e lastime as que não puderam nascer e as que não puderam viver. Que goste dos mesmos gostos. Que se emocione quando chamado de amigo. Que saiba conversar sobre coisas simples e de recordações da infância. 

Precisa-se de um amigo para se contar o que se viu de belo e triste durante o dia; das realizações, dos sonhos e da realidade. Deve gostar de ruas desertas, de poças d’água, de beira de estrada, do cheiro da chuva e de se deitar no ceapim orvalhado. Precisa-se de um amigo que diga que a vida vale a pena, não porque é bela, mas porque já se tem um amigo. Deve ser Don Quixote sem contudo desprezar Sancho. Precisa-se de um amigo para se ter consciência de que ainda se vive.

Can Teixidor


Conjunt de construccions situat dalt d'un turó arran de mar. L'edifici queda tancat dins un recinte murat i envoltat pel pati d'entrada, la capella i el celler. L'entrada a aquest recinte s'efectua a través d'un portal cobert que a banda i banda presenta uns plafons de ceràmica fets amb rajoles blanques i amb una inscripció en commemoració del primer tren de Barcelona a Mataró. La façana d'aquest portal és d'estil clàssic amb pilastres coronades amb capitells jònics, arc de mig punt i entablamento.



 Habitatge: Format per dos cossos: el de l'entrada i l'escala, i el de la cuina i menjador, que miren al mar i estan situats sobre el terrat inferior que cobreix les dependències de serveis, dels auxiliars que vivien a la masia. Aquestes dependències baixen tres plantes fins al molí que té sortida a la carretera. A aquesta façana que mira al mar, la casa té sis plantes, disposades en plans diferents segons la topografia del terreny. Una petita torre quadrada dóna caràcter a la casa. La part principal de la casa queda coberta per una teulada de dues vessants.
           

Capella de Can Teixidor: Edifici religiós situat al costat esquerre de l'entrada, dedicat a la Mare de Déu de Montserrat. És de planta quadrada i absis semicircular cobert amb una cúpula semiesfèrica formada per rajoles en forma d'escata. Resulta interessant que la porta d'entrada principal i única es troba al costat de l'absis. La llinda i els brancals són fets de pedra. La sagristia es troba a l'esquerra i davant el presbiteri es troba enterrat el seu darrer propietari, Gaietà de Planella i de Fiveller.
Història: El primer document que en fa referència és de l'any 1343 i és la venda del molí i les terres del Mas Torre del Molí, primer nom amb què es coneix, atorgada per Jaume de Santcliment a favor de Pere des Pla. Un altre document del 1434 identifica el moliner amb el nom de Francesc Torre. L'any 1668 les terres passen a ser propietat de Jaume Teixidor, ciutadà honrat de Barcelona i membre del Braç Reial del Consell de Cent. Durant la Guerra de Successió (1701–1714), can Teixidor va esdevenir un nucli borbònic. L'any 1863, el seu darrer propietari directe, Gaietà de Planella i de Fiveller, cinquè comte de Llar, vuitè baró de Granera i senyor de Castellcir, morí sense descendència i nomenà tres marmessors. Actualment continua essent una propietat particular gestionada pels marmessors que s'han anat succeint. El molí es va continuar utilitzant fins a l'any 1957, així com el forn de fer pa.
La darrera restauració ha estat realitzada l'any 1983, i ha deixat al descobert la porta adovellada i l'arc gòtic de la façana, abans tapada per una gran balconada. Possiblement el portal d'entrada és del segle XVIII.

It’s never too late to start Kendo

It’s never too late to start Kendo, no matter how old you are. That is the first sentence of a nice post in the Tozando website.
At bottom a summary of it.

Kendo is not a sport, but rather Budo, so that’s why respecting the etiquette in Kendo is very important. Life is just like Kendo, a life-long pursuit of knowledge and practice. Lately, it has become very popular do “リバ剣” (Ribaken; Revival Kendo) in Japan, meaning that the parent’s decide to start doing Kendo again, when their children starts Kendo in school.
I believe there are many students in Japan who considers joining a new club also when the school starts in April. Of course there is probably many who struggles to decide on what club to join, but it seems like there is a lot of people, who are not freshmen, but actually sophomores and third years that wishes to start Kendo.

“Is it too late to start Kendo even though I’m already in the 3rd year of Jr. high school?”
“I want to start from high school, but isn’t it too late?”
“How about starting from university, or beyond that?”

These are questions I hear all the time.

The philosophy of Kendo, according to the All Japan Kendo Federation, is to “mold the mind and body, cultivate vigorous spirit through correct and rigorous training… and forever pursue the cultivation of the self” To put it simply, the ultimate goal of Kendo is to cultivate oneself. In other words, it doesn’t matter when and how you start Kendo.

If you worry about winning, then of course, there are many who become conscious about their age. It’s normal to think that you want to win in a tournament or in a match, but in Kendo if you express your happiness by raising your fist into the air when you have made a hit, you will lose a point. Similarly if you don’t have enough Zanshin, your hit might not be counted as a proper hit. This is because Kendo puts great emphasis on “heart, technique and physique”, so Kendo more profound than just winning or losing.


PS: I start my practice neither in the high school nor at the University but at 49 years!

Should Martial Arts be part of the School Curriculum?

In the United States and most of Europe, self-defense is not taught at schools. Yes, schools have after-school clubs with trainers from both inside and outside the school using the gyms and classroom to teach a vast range of martial arts, but schools very rarely have it on their curriculum, let alone as a core subject. 
But after new research that shows that obesity levels are still rising in the first world at an astonishing rate, some are suggesting that martial arts may be a good alternative to help combat obesity, and also help children become better adapted to the wider world in terms of self-defense and discipline.
Even countries in Asia, where you would expect martial arts to be a much bigger thing, are still leaving martial arts to the extracurricular side of schooling. If it was part of a Physical Education curriculum, martial arts could become a popular alternative for students who are not into other ‘sports’ such as football, rugby, tennis, and basketball.
Martial arts provides not just a physical work out, but also a chance to develop self-defense skills while training both the body and mind to be disciplined and mindful. Studies have shown that there is a significant connection between practicing martial arts and self-esteem. Through the arts, students can develop discipline, and cultivate respect for different cultures – something even more important than ever before in our increasingly polarised societies. Martial arts also strengthens muscles and endurance, improves flexibility, balance and coordination. Everyone knows that with better physical health, come better, happier lives.
However, some have been keen to point out that yes, martial arts in every school would be ideal and a revolution to the physical education world, but finding those who are trained and qualified to teach said martial arts could probably prove to be a challenge. It is a chicken and egg situation, where without compulsory access to such sports, those who excel at it may never find themselves in a dojo to find out, but to bring it to everyone you need experienced trainers who can teach the martial art without fear of mishap or physical damage when something is done wrong or taught wrong.
These checks and balances, although absolutely necessary, will probably hamper such suggestions from ever coming to reality. An alternative would be seeing schools adopt a much more flexible curriculum with which they may be able to add martial arts themselves without the authorities being concerned.
What we do know however is that many students in high school today don’t do sports as there is no sport that is attractive enough to them to draw them in. This ends up leaving students feeling resentment towards sports, and especially those who do play sports – the jocks and bullies who end up on the top of the social ladder earlier. At the very least, schools should have the option, and with enough interest, they should open up a course so that those who hate traditional ‘ball sports’ are able to try their hand at something. And for those kids who always get bullied, self-defense may help even the playing field, eventually resulting in a much fairer, inclusive student society as a whole.
