First test tube baby Louise Brown (1978)

A video news release about the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby successfully conceived through IVF. This video was made from material preserved by the BFI National Archive. Find out more: https://catalogue.wellcome.ac.uk/reco... see also https://catalogue.wellcome.ac.uk/reco... for the clinical version.

Lesley, Louise's mother, was suffering from toxaemia (pre-eclampsia, a serious condition associated with hypertension and the presence of proteins in the urine – if left untreated it can lead to eclampsia with the risk of coma during pregnancy or immediately after birth). Consequently, Louise’s birth was by caesarean section.
